When the Second World War puts male baseball on the backburner, the first professional women's league is established: the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
Sisters Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty) both find themselves playing for the Rockford Peaches, coached by washed-up Chicago Cubs star Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks). Amid the struggles to keep the league going and to win it the respect it deserves, a fierce rivalry develops between the sisters that threatens their relationship.
Inspired by true events, this critically acclaimed hit offered a new spin on the sports film and an insightful perspective on feminism in the mid-20th century.
11 July, 1pm
After failing to qualify for the Summer Olympics, sprinter Derice Bannock (Leon Robinson) resolves to start Jamaica’s first national bobsled team for the Winter Olympics.
Coached by disgraced bobsled champion Irving Blitzer (John Candy), four young men leap out of their comfort zones for a chance at sporting glory.
Loosely inspired by true events and with a score by Hans Zimmer,
Cool Runnings is a feel-good family film about striving to achieve your goals, no matter how impossible the odds may seem.
12 July, 1pm
Eighteen-year-old British-Indian football fanatic Jesminder 'Jess' Bharma (Parminder Nagra) gets an opportunity to play for a local women’s team after a chance meeting with Jules (Keira Knightly).
Both women struggle to reconcile their passion for the game with the expectations of their families in this heartfelt coming-of-age film.
Sporting talent, cultural norms and teenage desires clash in an endearing sporting comedy. A hit at the box office,
Bend it Like Beckham explores traditional gender roles with upbeat humour and plenty of edge-of-the-seat football moments.
18 July, 1pm
From the wondrous minds of Studio Ghibli
(Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro), Howl’s Moving Castle is another masterfully inventive fantasy animation.
Loosely based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones, the film follows young Sophie, who is transformed into an elderly woman by a spiteful witch. In her quest to lift the curse, Sophie encounters the wizard Howl and is drawn into his magical castle on legs.
Against the backdrop of warring kingdoms, Sophie strives not only to free herself, but also to rescue Howl from the demon Calcifer. With themes of compassion, pacifism and loyalty,
Howl’s Moving Castle is an enchanting, visually stunning and thought-provoking film for the whole family.
19 July, 1pm
When extraterrestrial experiment Stitch accidentally lands in Hawaii, he is unwittingly adopted as a dog by young orphan Lilo - much to the chagrin of her older sister Nani, who is busy trying to prove she can care for Lilo.
With intergalactic authorities on the hunt for Stitch, and a social worker threatening to place Lilo in care, there is much at stake for this unlikely pair. Unfamiliar with human customs and created to wreak havoc, Stitch has an opportunity to discover the meaning of family and connection.
Filled with the signature humour, hijinks and heart of the best
Disney animation,
Lilo & Stitch is great fun for the whole family.
